They Came Together (2014) 4.5/5 Stars

“Right from the get-go, you realize this is not your average romantic comedy.”

They Came Together - DVD Reviews | Smartasses MagazineThey Came Together DVD Review – Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, Christopher Meloni. Right from the get-go, you realize this is not your average romantic comedy. With an all-star, NBC-ish cast that seems to be the norm in goofy movies these days (I.E. Wet, Hot American Summer), this film could be described as Airplane meets Saturday Night Live meets any movie starring Jennifer Lopez. Poehler and Rudd are their usual tongue-in-cheek selves, and seeing Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Office) as the “straight men” is refreshing. However, it’s the scene at the Halloween party between Law & Order’s Christopher Meloni and SNL’s Kenan Thompson which absolutely steals the show, and is so mind-bendingly funny, that the characters could literally sit and read a phonebook the rest of the way out and you’d still be giggling.

From Paris With Love (2009) 3/5 Stars

“All in all, there is just enough twist, and enough Besson, to put it two hairs above the typical Hollywood drivel, and that makes it worth your time to rent.”

From Paris With Love - DVD Reviews | Smartasses MagazineFrom Paris With Love DVD Review – John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Luc Besson (The Professional, District B:13, La Femme Nakita, The 5th Element) seemingly gets further and further away from being Luc Besson with each film.

There were times during the movie where I couldn’t help but think back to Janeane Garofalo’s sardonic take on Tango & Cash, and there were other times where the action was thrilling and the film flowed with the European espionage that Besson is known for.

Travolta was great, but for some reason, he just didn’t seem like the right fit for the film. I think I would have rather seen Vinnie Jones take on the role. All in all, there is just enough twist, and enough Besson, to put it two hairs above the typical Hollywood drivel, and that makes it worth your time to rent.

Killers (2010) 3/5 Stars

“All in all, never bad, with some genuinely entertaining moments.”

Killers - DVD Reviews | Smartasses MagazineKillers DVD Review – Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher. Kutcher & Heigl are always great for a romantic comedy. This one could have been a little better with some extended scenes, as the emotional transitions happen a little too quickly at times, with not enough rhyme or reason… and the dialogue suffers as a result. Selleck’s ubiquitous moustache and canyon-like facial crevices literally overshadow what you’re supposed to be focused on at times. Catherine O’Hara is great as Heigl’s soused mother. All in all, never bad, with some genuinely entertaining moments.
