Legend of The Shadowless Sword DVD Review – Hyeon-jun Shin, So-yi Yoon, Seo-jin Lee, Ki-yong Lee. “House of Flying Tigers Hidden Hero” meets “Hercules Xena Merlin WB”… with a few South Korean Cap’n Jack Sparrows thrown in for good measure. Why do I keep thinking there are other ‘Zhang Ymou’ movies out there?
To me, the entire appeal of a foreign movie is that it’s not from Hollywood. Unfortunately, this movie was more pathetically ‘Hollywood’ than many actual Hollywood movies are– so much in fact, that I even gave up on my hard fast rule of always watching the subtitled version of a foreign film, and just opted for the dubbed route instead. The storyline was so thin, that hearing the true emotions of the original actors just seemed irrelevant after a certain point. With that said, though I must admit, the Asian Angelina Jolie wannabe was pretty hot, neither the eye candy nor the “fun” was enough to bring the film to even a mediocre level. Case in point: I sincerely doubt the phrases “Sh*t!” and “Son of a bitch!” were popular in 8th century Korea.

The Collector (2009) 3/5 Stars
“Once you accept the movie for being ‘Home Alone’ meets ‘Saw’, it’s actually a very good slasher flick– even without the prerequisite smart mouthed jock.”
Watching the elongated trailer, I didn’t think I was going to like this. Certainly the logic of Home Alone meets Saw is pretty illogical, especially when considering the amount of time it would take a baddie to rig someone else’s house so elaborately.
But once you put that logic on hold and accept the movie for what it is, it’s actually a very good slasher flick– even without the prerequisite smart mouthed jock and hell bent hottie cheerleader. The cinematography is extremely well done, the pace is just right, and the length is perfect. Definitely worth a rental.
